Over 31 million people follow Chanel’s official Instagram, but Karl Lagerfeld isn’t one of them. “I don’t even know how it looks,” he told The Cut in a new, wide-ranging, and often hilarious interview. Why? Well, between getting texted photo updates “from” (his words) his beloved cat, Choupette, and overseeing the creative direction for both Chanel and Fendi, the man simply just doesn’t have the time.
Lagerfeld is famously outspoken, but he hasn’t given an interview in a while. In this gem, he revealed:
- He doesn’t do social media. Or Internet. “Personally, I have no time,” he said. “I don’t do internet, I don’t do Facebook. I have to sketch, I have to play with Choupette, I have to sleep. The day is too short for that.”
- He does do private jets, but prefers that they be mostly empty, save for Choupette and a few people. “You know, the problem with private jets is that even if you have a big one, if you have many people [aboard], then it is a nightmare,” he said. “More than three or four, forget about it.” Choupette, however, always loves flying private. “She is always on the knees of the pilots. She loves private jets.” Still! It’s better than flying commercial, which Lagerfeld hasn’t done in 20 years.
- He doesn’t do basic life skills. “I don’t know how to cook, I don’t know how to make a bed,” he said. “I only know sketching and talking and making collections.” And he was destined to be this way. “As a child I was told by my mother, you must learn nothing,” he said. “You always have to depend on people, because then you have to make an effort to have the money that they will do it for you.
- He…could be a farmer? Lagerfeld grew up in the countryside in Germany and told interview Carl Swanson, “I love cows. I could be a farmer.”
