12-year-old middle school student dies from flu-related illness

A student at Stacy Middle School in Milford died from a flu-related illness, according to Michael Walsh, the Chairman of Milford’s Board of Selectmen.

Aaron Zenus, a seventh-grade student at Stacy Middle School, was being treated for the flu at Milford Regional Medical Center when he died Wednesday night, said Walsh.

“It is a sad situation,” Walsh told the Milford Daily News. “The doctors and nurses did everything they could.”

Superintendent Kevin McIntyre notified town and school officials of Zenus’ death Thursday morning.

“Unfortunately, I have sad news to share with you,” McIntyre wrote in an email to school and town officials. “Aaron Zenus, a 7th grade student at Stacy Middle School passed away (Wednesday) evening. Our thoughts go out to the family.”

Milford Public School counselors and resources were available at the school Thursday and will be available again Friday for any student struggling with the news of Zenus’ death.

It is the first flu-related pediatric death in Massachusetts this season.
